Library Volunteers

We Need a Hand . . .

No, not the applause kind of “hand” (although that would be nice too!!!) but the other kind – the kind that involves you donating a couple of hours of your time every week to help us with the dozens of things that need to be done behind the scenes to keep our Library ticking.

What’s there to do?  Well, for starters, there’s helping to re-shelve our many books and tidy up displays.  Or you could help organize the crafts for our various children’s programs.  Or work on the posters that have to be designed and put up around the Village.  Then there’re the people that need to be phoned about our special events.   If you really want to burn off some calories, there’s always tables and chairs to be re-arranged, and boxes to be carted off to our storeroom.  There’s also our Books on Wheels program, our “Used Book” project, the spine labels that need repairing, and . . .  Well, let’s just say, as a Library volunteer, you’d never be bored!

What kind of skills do you need?  Simply knowing your alphabet is a good start if you’re up for re-shelving books and playing with spine labels.  A little creativity is useful if you’d like to help design our bulletin boards and posters.  Being able to manage your time (so many tasks, so few hours!!) is another plus.  Appreciating the Library and the work it does in our community is a “given.”  And, above all, a willingness to work with our staff and patrons to make the Library the best it can be.

So . . .  what d’ya think?  In the run of a week, could you spare us a morning or an afternoon, or maybe even just a couple of hours here and there?  If you can, we’ll do our best to match your interests and your schedule with ours. Why not give Belva or Bonnie a call at 506-365-2018 (or e-mail them at dtcslib@gnb.ca) and talk about what we could do for each other?

Partners

The Doaktown Community/School Library is one of 14 branch libraries (and one Bookmobile) in the York Library Region which, in turn, is a component of the New Brunswick Public Library (NBPLS). We operate in partnership with the Village of Doaktown and School District 18, whose financial contribution toward our continued service is gratefully acknowledged.

We also rely on the assistance of our dedicated volunteers who do their part to ensure that the services offered by the Doaktown Library are of the highest possible caliber. If you are interested in helping in this capacity (and we hope you are), please read our Volunteer section. And, incidentally, we’re still accepting donations of both books and baking – call the Library (365-2018) if you need information on the former and contact Brandi Hovey (365-8803) if you’d like to contribute the latter.  Everything will be put to good use and won’t you feel great, knowing you’ve been a part of this very worthy cause!!!

TEACHERS TEA
(Honouring All Educators of Doaktown Schools)
Saturday, August 28, 2010   11:30 am – 1:00 pm
St. Thomas United Church Hall

As part of the Two Schools – One Spirit Reunion Project, Reading Rainbows is hosting a Teachers Tea on Saturday, August 28 at the St. Thomas United Church Hall.  A wonderful opportunity for those who taught in the Doaktown schools down through the years to get together and reminisce (hopefully they’ll have only good things to say about their former students although, as they say, we wouldn’t bet the farm on that!).  Our Committee is doing everything it can to get this invitation out to everyone but would appreciate your help either in passing the message on to any former teacher you might know or in giving their contact information to either Belva or Bonnie at the Library (365-2018).  And for further information concerning the Two Schools – One Spirit Reunion, check out the Village of Doaktown website (www.doaktown.com) under “Events.”

ZOOMERS & BLOOMERS PROGRAM:  Zoomers (adults aged 50 and up) are invited to join our Zoomers and Bloomers group that began in November.  The weekly one-hour programs are hosted alternately by the Zoomers, then by the Bloomers.  Why not sign up for some fun programs to beat the winter blues and enjoy an hour or two with some fascinating young people.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Would your child benefit from one-on-one tutoring in a pleasant environment?  The schools may be recommending that your child participate in the Literacy for Kids program at the library again this summer. The Literacy Kits may be checked out anytime as long as a parent or guardian accompanies them.
The Library has purchased a Cricket Machine for producing professional letters, numbers, signs and art creations to enhance posters, banners, exhibits, card making, scrapbooking, bulletin boards and decorations for special occasions such as baby and wedding showers, anniversaries, graduations, church celebrations and school projects.  For a very reasonable fee, Library staff will cut them out for you (the proceeds will be put toward the Library’s proposed expansion).
The library is now collecting your email address so you can be sent a reminder notice as to when your books are due.  Give us a call at 365-2018 or stop in for a visit and give us your email address.
Watch for our new Adopt-A-Book Wish List. View it at the Doaktown Library or view here on-line. You may adopt one or more of the books for a friend, a relative or yourself.  It’s an excellent way to remember a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion. For more information call the library at 365-2018.
Our ADOPT-A-BOOK Program
List of Books Currently Up for Adoption (awaiting new list)
On November 30, 2006, the Honorable Herménégilde Chiasson, Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick, helped the Doaktown Library celebrate its 20th anniversary by launching our new Adopt-A-Book Program. We are very excited about this project because of the opportunities it offers for everyone to get involved in supporting one of our Village’s most important resources, its public library, and by so doing, to promote literacy, reading and lifelong learning among our residents.
The Honourable Herménégilde Chiasson, Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick, with Paul Gillespie, Chair of the Doaktown Library's Board of Trustees.
Have a look and see if there are any that you yourself might like to read or perhaps there’s one you think might appeal to a friend or relative. Maybe you know of someone who has a special occasion coming up or, if you're a business or organization, perhaps there's something on the list that matches your group's particular interest. Perhaps you've lost a special person from your life and would like to remember them by making a donation to the Library.
If you find a match, contact the Doaktown Library at 365-2018 or email us at dtcslib@gnb.ca. A staff member will help you complete a donor card and take down the information necessary to return a tax receipt to you. When you donate, you also have the option of choosing text for a commemorative bookplate to be inserted at the front of the book – or any other library material such as a CD or DVD -- you might select.
Our wish list of books and other materials available for adoption will be updated on a regular basis. Our last 20 years have been memorable ones – help make our next 20 equally impressive!!!
Board of Trustees
Commemorative CD
(View our sample CD photos in the left hand column of this page.)
The Doaktown Library wishes to announce that the long-awaited CD commemorating its 20th Anniversary is now on sale at the library. With almost 300 color photographs of programs, patrons and special events and exceptional people, we're sure you’ll enjoy this walk down “memory lane.”  Included in this CD are tributes to our 32 Fall Home Tour hostesses (1999-2006), pictures taken during our official anniversary celebration held on November 30, 2006 and a host of photos of the children and grown-ups who make our Library such a great place to be.who make our library such a great place to be.  It is a wonderful souvenir for parents, grandparents, and especially those now living “away”. A great gift idea for someone special at Easter time, Mother's Day or when that unexpected birthday suddenly pops up on the horizon. Available for $15.00 at the Doaktown Library, all proceeds to go toward improving library services to the people of Doaktown and the surrounding areas.
We have received inquiries from several individuals who would prefer to have this 20th Anniversary commemoration in book form.  Unfortunately, owing to the high cost of color printing, we are unable to offer an exact replica of the CD in this format.  We have, however, put together a 44 page booklet which, we hope, captures the “flavour” of the CD.  Each of these books will be made available at $25.00 payable in advance (see a sample copy is on display at the library).
For further information or to place your order, please call Belva or Bonnie at the Doaktown Library (506-365-2018), e-mail dtcslib@gnb.ca or simply drop in.
For those of you outside the immediate Doaktown area, arrangements can be made to ship these products to you.  Just send us your name and mailing address, the quantities you are requesting, whether you want this souvenir in book or CD format, and a cheque made payable to The Doaktown Community/School Library
The following prices will apply to EACH copy requested:
CD -     $15.00 + $1.25 (shipping and handling) = $16.25*
Book -  $25.00 + $2.00 (shipping and handling) = $27.00*
*Prices valid inside Canada only
Send this information and your cheque to:
The Doaktown Community/School Library, 430 Main Street, Doaktown, NB, E9C 1E8.
Fall Home Tour and Luncheon / Fall Frolic
Since 1999, the Doaktown Library’s Fall Home Tour and Luncheon has not only been our biggest fundraiser, but also one of “the” social events of the year for women in the Upper Southwest Miramichi area and beyond.  In 2006, to celebrate the Library’s 20th Anniversary, we decided to mark the occasion by expanding the home tour and luncheon to include a Ladies Fair, an exhibition of goods and services designed to pamper both body and soul.  In addition, we invited local businesses and organizations to join with us to sponsor activities and events throughout the community for all members of the family to enjoy – the result was Doaktown’s first-ever Fall Frolic and what a great time it was!
And yes, everyone seemed to enjoy 2006’s Fall Frolic so much that the organizers are making it an annual event.  Check out our events at the Doaktown Fall Frolic.
Used Books and Magazines
Looking for an excuse to get rid of all those books and magazines that have been cluttering up your living room for way too long?  Have the kids outgrown their story books?  Your husband finally decided that maybe he could survive without all those westerns he’s collected over the years?  Want to get the stuff out of your house but can’t bring yourself to take them to the recycling depot?
The Doaktown Library is always looking for donations to its used book display – “gently used” reading materials that we can place for sale at “greatly reduced prices.”  It helps US raise money for the many little extras around the Library and it helps YOU get them off your premises with a clear conscience.
So why not give call Belva or Bonnie at 506-365-2018 or e-mail them at dtcslib@gnb.ca for details, and then get ready to enjoy all that extra space.
