Doak Historic Site
The
Doak House takes you back in time and tells the
story of one of our first families that settled
in this area. The house is a good example of an
1800 style home. It was constructed before the
1825 Miramichi fire. Doaktown was one of the only
communities that did not suffer damage in the
fire. Many say it was because of the strong
religious nature of the people that lived here.
The barn was built in the 1850-70 time frame. The
property stayed in Squire Doak's family until the
death of Margaret. At that time it was purchased
by the province and restored to its present
condition.
Doak House - What do
we have to offer a tourist? We have the standard
guided tour of the site. Clean wash rooms close
to the parking lot. There is a weaving studio on
site and in full production for the tourist to
view and even purchase goods. We are able to
demonstrate how to spin fibre (wool, flax,) into
yarn. We also show case the making of woven
goods. By appointment, we will offer training in
spinning and weaving. Please contact the Doak
Site for more information. (506) 365-2026. Closed
during winter months.
Atlantic Salmon Museum
The Atlantic Salmon Museum
(Miramichi Salmon Museum) is located on the banks
of the Main South West Miramichi River in the
Village of Doaktown. The museum tells the story
of the Atlantic salmon and the people that know
this king of sport fish, and through its many
interpretive displays shows the life and history
of the Atlantic Salmon. The aquarium houses a
wide variety of the river life. In the various
aquariums you will find the Atlantic Salmon in
its many forms. It also features an audio/visual
display. They hold numerous activities throughout
the summer, one of their most popular being July
1st celebrations.
Nelson
Hollow Covered Bridge
This is the oldest standing Covered
Bridge in New Brunswick. It was built around 1876
and is 78 feet long. In 1899 it was completely
renovated and the Doaktown Historical Society
once again restored it in 1977. Although it is
closed to traffic you can still walk across it.

N.B.
Trails
Experience our wonderful trail for
walking and biking in the summer and snowmobiling
in the winter. Catch some beautiful vistas along
the river valley, listen to the wonderful songs
of a vast array of birds hidden amongst the trees
and take in the fresh Miramichi air. The N.B.
trail system runs right
through the heart of Doaktown and offers an
excellent route for walking and biking. A view of
the beautiful Miramichi river can be seen from
many points on the trail. In the winter time, it
serves as a well groomed snowmobile trail that
connects to the rest of the province serving the
many snowmobilers that travel through our
village. The Miramichi Snowgoers Club works hard
at maintaining a top quality trail throughout the
winter months. For photos of our
trail, click here.
Wooden
Foot Bridge (McNamee/Priceville)
If you take a detour down the McNamee road you
will find a 630 foot long footbridge. The
original bridge collapsed in 1939, taking the
lives of 3 local residents. They later added a
center pier for proper stability. Eventually the
bridge was replaced in 1988 and has been a
favourite spot for both tourists and locals. Many
people start here with their canoes and travel
the Miramichi until they reach Doaktown or their
destination down river. A relaxing day on the
Miramichi and a great photo opportunity.
Central
Miramichi Woodmen's Museum (Boiestown)
Our neighboring community of
Boiestown hosts this museum. It is situated on 15
acres and provides an historical background to
the lumbering industry and the struggles and
triumphs of the woodsmen and their families who
were the early pioneers of this area. A display
of authentic tools, documents and photographs
help you journey back to earlier times when those
settlers carved a living from the forest and
raised their families here on the Upper
Miramichi.
